A locking system consists of a latch (22) which is moved by a mechanism (21). The mechanism (21) is operated by a control unit (20) which initiates a change in the state of the lock according to predetermined conditions and ensures that the change is maintained until the next change. The control unit (20) includes a section (23) which has two redundant units (31,32) which both send similar instructions to the mechanism actuator (30) but have different structures and methods of operation. Under normal conditions the actuating unit behaves as an "and gate". If either of the two instructing units (31,32) fails the other switches it out and continues to issue it's own instructions to the mechanism actuator (30).
