PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of easily recovering a residual toner remaining on a latent image carrier after transfer from the latent image carrier, and capable of miniaturizing the image forming apparatus without providing a cleaning device for the latent image carrier.

SOLUTION: The electrophotographic image forming apparatus comprises a temporary holding means 40 which recovers and holds a reversely charged toner T1in a residual toner remaining on a photoreceptor 1 after transfer with a transfer device 6, and returns the held reversely charged toner to the photoreceptor 1; recovering means 5, 6 which recover the reversely charged toner from the photoreceptor 1; and a charge eliminator 46 which eliminates charges from the photoreceptor 1.
