PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To keep stable condition of engine rotation and favorable engine performance even when actual opening area of a suction passage is changed in accordance with opening of a suction valve due to secular change. SOLUTION: This electronic controller calculates target air amount Qtrg corresponding to a driving condition of an engine (steps 110, 120) and calculates the maximum basic lift amount of the suction valve for sucking air of the target air mount Qtrg (step 130). This electronic controller stores compensation coefficient K and calculates the maximum target lift amount by compensating the maximum basic lift amount by the compensation coefficient K corresponding to a driving condition of the engine at the time (steps 140, 150) to control a maximum lift amount variable mechanism of the suction valve to achieve the maximum target lift amount (step 160). The compensation coefficient K is updated based on deviation of the target air amount Qtrg and actual air amount Qact detected by an air flow meter (steps 170, 190). COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO&NCIPI
