A security device (20) is provided which comprises a carrier for a tell-tale provision (43) having electromagnetic characteristics. The device (20) is adapted to be releasably secured to an article (10) to be protected, in particular to the shaft (12) of a golf club (10), in a tamper-resilient manner and to retain the tell-tale provision 43) in a spaced relationship from the article (10). In this way any adverse magnetic effects on the tell-tale provision (43) by ferromagnetic parts (12) of the article (10) are avoided. Preferably, the tell-tale provision (43) is spaced at least 3 mm from the article (10) to which the device (20) is secured.
