PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for recovering terephthalic acid, by which a polyester such as PET, etc., is decomposed with a small amount of a solvent in a short time and most by-products are reused. SOLUTION: The method for recovering terephthalic acid from the polyester between terephthalic acid and an alcohol comprises carrying out electrolysis using an electrolyte composed of a cation not to disturb reduction of proton and an anion not to disturb oxidation of hydroxy ion, such as an aqueous solution of sodium sulfate as an anolyte and an alcohol (e.g. ethylene glycol) solution containing the same electrolyte and a small amount of water as a catholyte, mixing the alcohol solution containing a base formed in a cathode by the electrolysis with the polyester to decompose the polyester into a terephthalic acid salt and the alcohol and neutralizing the obtained terephthalic acid salt with an acid.
