PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for manufacturing titanium oxide having a photocatalytic activity and a narrow particle size distribution. SOLUTION: The method for manufacturing titanium oxide comprises heating a solution of a titanium compound (e.g. titanium sulfate, titanium oxysulfate, titanium trichloride, titanium tetrachloride, titanium oxychloride, titanium tetrabromide, tetraalkoxytitanium, or a titanium chelate compound) to 60°C or higher without hydrolyzing the titanium compound, reacting the titanium compound with a base (e.g. ammonia, sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide, lithium hydroxide, or an amine) at 60°C or higher, and firing the resultant product.
