<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To quantitatively and easily estimate crack resistance with good repeatability in a method for estimating an optical compensation layer of a polarizer with optical compensation layer which is made up by such a process that after orienting polymerizable liquid crystal materials, the polarizer and the compensation layer fixed by the polymerization are laminated through an adhesive layer. <P>SOLUTION: The method for estimating the optical compensation layer of the polarizer with optical compensation layer uses an device including at least a needle-like jig, a jig capable of applying the needle-like jig with loads, a sample table, and a mechanism capable of reciprocating the sample table or the needle-like jig at a constant cycle. In the method, the first or second surface of the polarizer with optical compensation layer mounted on the sample table is abraded prescribed times by the needle-like jig being applied with prescribed loads, and then strength values of the optical compensation layer are estimated by cracks occurring in the optical compensation layer of the polarizer with optical compensation layer. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO&NCIPI |
