<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide refractory that is excellent in spalling resistance, corrosion resistance and coating adhesivity, and is used in a kiln such as a cement rotary kiln which does not contain chromium. <P>SOLUTION: The basic refractory is characterized by containing 80-99 wt.% of a magnesia clinker, 0.5-10 wt.% of a spinel clinker and 0.5-10 wt.% of a zirconia raw material. Spalling resistance, corrosion resistance and coating adhesivity are improved by using magnesia as a main raw material component and including a suitable amount of the spiner clinker and the zirconia raw material in the basic refractory composition. A brick generates microcracks internally due to the difference of a thermal expansion coefficient with magnesia and therefor the spalling resistance is enhanced. The viscosity of a liquid phase produced upon the reaction of the zirconia raw material with the cement raw material is enhanced and in turn the corrosion resistance and the coating adhesivity are enhanced.
