PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To acquire a high-quality picture by optically and electronically removing a highlighted part in an image before the light reaches the imaging element. SOLUTION: The highlight suppression picture photographing apparatus is provided with a camera part 10 for acquiring desired video, a highlight suppression signal generating part 22 for generating a non-binary highlight suppression signal on the basis of a video output from a blue channel in video outputs of red, green and blue channels outputted from the camera part 10, an active filter part 16 provided near the image formation plane of the camera part 10 for optically controlling the quantity of the light transmitted to a red/green imaging device part 15 in response to the highlight suppression signal, a blue channel matching part 23 for electronically suppressing the blue channel image output on the basis of the highlight suppression signal, a restoration signal generating part 24 for generating a restoration signal on the basis of the highlight suppression signal, and a final video signal output part 28 for outputting an image signal of a red/green/blue channel acquired by the camera part 10 as a highlight suppression image wherein highlight is optically and electronically suppressed.
