PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader which ensures safe and proper operation, and reduces power consumption effectively. SOLUTION: The reader has an original feeding mechanism which moves an original 3 interposing it between driving rollers 4 and follower rollers 6 which touch the driving rollers 4, and an optical system which projects an image on the original 3 onto an image read sensor 12 through a read opening 9 adjoining the position of the original. The reader has a first frame 1 for holding the driving rollers 4, and a second frame 2 for holding the follower rollers 6. These two frames are so constituted as to be movable between a first state in which the driving rollers 4 and the follower rollers 6 touch, and a second state in which the driving rollers 4 and the follower roller 6 separate mutually.
