PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To carry out type discrimination and determination of writing propriety, in response to variety of disks. SOLUTION: An opening/closing means of detecting holes of a cartridge is structured so as to form a plane which is almost parallel with respect to a reference plane of the cartridge at positions of the detection holes, when the detecting holes are set in closed states. At least first and second detection holes H0, H1 are formed on the cartridge, the second detection hole H1 is opened/closed by the opening/closing means, and the first detection hole H0 is always set in open state. In a disk drive device and a disk discrimination method, discrimination information contents (e.g., wiring proprieties) by the detecting holes as well as the disk types are discriminated, according to the open/close states of one or more detecting holes formed on the cartridge and the result of the disk type discrimination, using a signal based on the light reflected from a loaded recording medium.
