<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lighting unit having a light source not broken even when a light guide plate is swollen by thermal expansion or moisture absorption, and to provide a liquid crystal display using the same. <P>SOLUTION: The lighting unit comprises a flat plate-shaped light guide plate 3, an almost L-shaped light source 2 arranged so as to face the end surface of the light guide plate, a reflector 4 surrounding a part of the periphery of the light source, holding the light source at a position facing the surface of the light guide plate, and reflecting light generated at the light source to make the light incident on the end surface of the light guide plate, and a housing 7 arranged so as to surround the reflector, and is constructed so as to guide the light from the light source through the light guide plate and emit light from the emitting surface of the light guide plate. Holding means 3a, 4a for keeping the position of the reflector against the light guide plate constant are formed on the reflector having an almost U-shaped cross section, and the light source is housed in a space formed by the end surface of the light guide plate and the inner surface of the reflector. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO&NCIPI |
