PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a mesoporous transition metal oxide with its function improved by using a different kinds of metals. SOLUTION: There is provided a method for synthesizing a metal-doped mesoporous transition metal oxide in which the metals originated in the below-mentioned metal oxides are allowed to be present uniformly on an atomic level by a sol-gel process, which method comprises the steps of adding an oxide of a dopant metal to an organic solution in which at least a template is present, agitating the resulting solution to uniformly disperse the metal oxide, and adding a transition metal compound which forms a mesoporous oxide by a sol-gel process or both a transition metal compound which forms a mesoporous oxide by a sol-gel process and an acid to establish acidic conditions which solubilize the dopant metal oxide.
