PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and a device for evaluating a valve clearance, capable of always making exact evaluations on the valve clearance of an engine with a variable timing mechanism (VVT). SOLUTION: The vibration of the engine 1 is detected to extract valve vibration signals by a vibration detection means 2 before and after rotational phase changes by the VVT, and crank angles are calculated by a crank angle calculation means 12. The vibration peak distributions of the valve vibration signals are grasped respectively by a vibration peak distribution grasping means 13, and both of them are stored in vibration peak distribution storage means 14, 15 and compared with each other by a valve specifying means 16 to specify respective valves. A vibration peak generation timing of each of the specified valves are collated with a vibration peak generation timing for each of the valve clearances of the corresponding valves stored in a data base 18 by a valve clearance specifying means 17and the valve clearance of each of the valves is specified for evaluation.
