<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thermal printer suited for printing an OHP film by mitigating the influence of matting manifesting during high density printing. <P>SOLUTION: The thermal printer has printing control circuits 31 to 33 controlling the caloric value of a thermal head 20 in accordance with the gradation data A of an image and a mode setting means 101 performing printing of a gradation display by transferring ink on an ink film to an OHP film by heat from the thermal head 20 and setting an action mode, depending on whether the printing form is an OHP film or not. The printing control circuits 31 to 33 control the caloric value of the thermal head 20 in an action mode corresponding to the OHP film to ensure that heating of a prescribed amount is made to the printing form to which a transfer of an ink associated with the gradation data has been made.
