<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent toner soil directly transferred by an accidental jamming of a transfer material from sticking to and consequently soiling the back of the transfer material, in the transfer material conveyance belt of an image forming apparatus that performs fixing before separation. <P>SOLUTION: The transfer material conveyance belt Bp makes the state that it is away from an intermediate transfer body 6a a home position. An image forming operation is performed such that after a state in which the transfer material P has been attracted to the surface of the conveyance belt Bp is detected by a transfer material detection means D with specific timing, the press contact of the conveyance belt Bp with the intermediate transfer belt 6 is performed at a secondary transfer nip N2.
