PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader which can efficiently and successively read a plurality of arranged documents. SOLUTION: The image reader is provided which reads images of documents by moving a sensor unit 202 for reading the images in a sub-scanning direction with respect to the documents. When the plurality of arranged documents 303 and 304 are read, control for returning the sensor unit 202 to its home position after document read and starting read of a next document, control for temporarily stopping the sensor unit 202 after document read and starting read of a next document, and control for moving the sensor unit 202 back by a specified distance after document read and then starting read of a next document are selectively carried out.
