The elevator cabin [5] is raised and lowered on a cable coupled to pulleys [3,4] and the top one is motor driven. A safety braking system consisting of brake pads [8,9] operated hydraulically [17] prevents movement. An optical sensor [14] responds to markings on a roller [11] held against the cable to provide motion detection signals fed to a controller.
