A data protection method in which the communication of the storage medium/controller with the host/host controller by hardware-side manipulation of the data-, address-, or control-signals of the interface of the storage device until successful authentication of the user is avoided. The procedure is now expanded in that the storage device announces a defect or fault to the host system in order to stop the data communication. An independent claim is included for a device for protecting stored data.
