The method for the forming and transferring of cigarette groups (13) on a multi-track packing machine with a predetermined number of wrapping paths (23) has each cigarette group guided into an associated pocket (12) of a conveyor (10,11). The conveyor is moved in steps by a length with is greater than the distance between two successive pockets multiplied by the predetermined number. The conveyor may be moved in steps by a length which is equal to the distance (d) between two successive pockets multiplied by the predetermined number. An independent claim is included for a device for the forming and transferring of cigarette groups on a multi-track packing machine.
