Compositions based on polyvinyl alcohol with carboxyl groups or polyglycol units in the molecule, containing 0.1-50 (preferably 0.1-10) wt.% polysaccharide(s) of the polymeric uronic acid type or derivatives thereof. A PVA-based polymer composition containing (a) 50-99.9 wt% polyvinyl alcohol with an average mol. wt. of 5000-25000 and a degree of hydrolysis of 79-99.9 mol%, and with carboxyl groups or polyglycol units in the molecule, and (b) 0.1-50 (preferably 0.1-15, (especially 0.1-10) wt.% polysaccharide(s) of formula (I).
