A surgical fluid barrier 1 comprises a thin sheet of elastic or the like material such as polyurethane with a central opening 2 of such a diameter that a limb 4 of a patient for surgery may be passed therethrough. The opening 2 forming a substantially fluid tight seal against the skin surface of the limb 4. The sheet material may be 50-150 microns, most preferably 100 microns, thick. The central opening 2 may be circular in shape, the exterior of the sheet may be circular or a simple polygon shape. The sheet may further include means, such as notches 3, to allow removal of the sheet from a limb 4 after use, such as by tearing at weak points formed by the notches 3. The barrier 1 may be applied to a patient limb 4 after a tourniquet or cuff has been secured in place on the limb 4. The fluid baffler 1 opening 2 may then located on the limb 4 in a position just below the tourniquet. The free sheet material of the barrier 1 may then be folded over the tourniquet so that it becomes shielded from surgical fluids used at the site of the proposed surgery. Also disclosed is a method of fitting a temporary waterproof cover to a tourniquet on the limb 4 of a patient for surgery, and of removing said cover.
|
