PURPOSE: A method for detecting a disk state of a DVD player is provided to analyze/detect disk states during a servo initialization after inserting a disk, and to set a variable setup value, thereby improving the servo performance of the disk. CONSTITUTION: A user inserts a disk into a DVD player, and starts a servo initialization(10). A microcomputer receives an FE(Focus Error) signal and a TE(Tracking Error) signal from an RF(Radio Frequency) amplifier, and receives a scratch signal from a servo controller(12). The microcomputer analyzes the received FE signal, the TE signal, and the scratch signal, and detects the state of the disk(14). The microcomputer performs the servo initialization according to the detected state of the disk(16).
