PURPOSE: A composition containing an extract of Smilax china or Dioscorea quinqueloba Thunb. is provided. The extract containing dioscin promotes growth hormone release. The food composition containing the extract is therefore used as a new functional food, a health supplementary food or a special nutritious food for promoting growth hormone release. CONSTITUTION: The composition of a functional food, a health supplementary food or a special nutritious food for promoting growth hormone release contains an extract of Smilax china or Dioscorea quinqueloba Thunb. containing dioscin represented by the formula(1) and having effect on the promotion of growth hormone release. The dioscin is obtained by the steps of: extracting and filtering a pulverized material of Smilax china or Dioscorea quinqueloba Thunb. in methanol or a mixture of methanol and water; concentrating the filtrate under reduced pressure; agitating and filtering the concentrate in distilled water and butanol; and then concentrating the filtrate under reduced pressure.
