PURPOSE: An AAL2-5 converter having an ATM SAR and a data compressor inside and a conversion method thereof are provided to increase data transfer rate and transfer efficiency by compressing ATM cell data in transmission data converted from AAL(ATM Adaptation Layer)2 to AAL5 or from AAL5 to AAL2. CONSTITUTION: A processor(400) has an ATM(Asynchronous Transfer Mode) SAR(Segmentation and And Reassembly) and a data compressor inside. CAM(Contents Addressable Memory)s(710,720) compare inputted ATM cell data for analyzing the ATM cell data and has reference data made by a user. An EEPROM(Electrically Erasable and Programmable Read Only Memory)(500) and a flash ROM(Read Only Memory)(600) drive the processor(400). SDRAM(Synchronous Dynamic Random Access Memory)s(810,820) process the input and output ATM cell data.
