Pedestrian detection method in environs of motor vehicle, uses thermal image of view ahead of vehicle, extracts hottest sources and compares them with characteristics of pedestrian, presenting enhanced display on in-vehicle screen

The detection of a pedestrian makes use of a digital thermal image (2) ahead of the vehicle (1). Gray levels are compared against a threshold so only the hottest heat sources are retained. Each heat source is analyzed (3) against criteria of height orientation and shape to identify presence of a pedestrian. The image is then presented on a display screen (4) inside the motor vehicle.
