PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polarization maintaining optical fiber which can easily be manufactured without requiring a dedicated manufacturing line. SOLUTION: The polarization maintaining optical fiber 10 comprises a core 11 as its center part and a clad 12 around it and has such a characteristic that the core 11 has a relatively larger refractive index than the clad 12, and a void 13 bored in the core 11 is made to be rectangular.
