PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a mold cooling structure that positively cools molten metal in a large expanded section situated more inward in the mold than a narrow small section in a cavity and that suppresses the cooling of the molten metal in the narrow small section as little as possible, and to provide a mold cooling method. SOLUTION: In the mold 10, a cavity 10a composed of the narrow small section 10b for molding the thin part of a casting product and the large expanded section 10c for molding a thick part is formed, with the large expanded section situated more inward in the mold 10 than the narrow small section. In addition, in the mold 10, a cooling hole 10a comprising a small diameter part 12d and a large diameter part 12e is formed, with a cooling pipe 20 arranged in the cooling hole 12a. The small diameter part 12d is situated near the large expanded section 10c while the large diameter part 12e is situated near the narrow small section 10b. The diameter of the large diameter part 12e is larger than the outer diameter of an outer pipe 21 constituting the cooling pipe 20, with a space 12f formed between the outer peripheral face of the outer pipe 21 and the inner face of the large diameter part 12e.
