A fuel cell including a gas diffusion layer having excellent water retention capability is to be provided. The gas diffusion layer is constituted of a modified cross-sectioned carbon fiber. Examples of a modified cross-section include a cross-shape, an X-shape, a Y-shape, a W-shape, an H-shape, an L-Shape, a star-shape, a multifoil-shape and so forth. Employing a modified cross-sectioned carbon fiber for constituting the gas diffusion layer permits moisture to be retained in a recess located between protruding portions, thereby upgrading water retention capability of the gas diffusion layer.
