The present invention provides for a method for detecting the presence of isocyanate in a sample by (a) contacting an isocyanate derivatizing agent with a sample under conditions suitable to the formation of a detectable reaction product, in particular by using catalysts shown in Figure 1, and (b) establishing if isocyanate is present in the sample by determining the presence or absence of the reaction product. 1,8-Diaminonaphthalene (DAN) is utilized as a bifunctional nucleophilic derivitizing agent for detecting isocyanate.
