<PICT:0563590/IV/1> A moisture-laden cake of artificial silk or the like, such as is obtained by the viscose process, is dried by placing it in a high frequency electric field under at least a partial vacuum. All parts of the thread cake are thus heated uniformly and drying proceeds uniformly with uniform shrinkage of the thread. Fabrics woven from the treated thread do not show irregularities of lustre or weave. The electric field is adjusted so that the cakes may be dried at temperatures under 140 DEG F. in about one hour. A vacuum of over 24 inches of mercury may be used. As shown in Fig. 1, a rayon cake 20 is placed on a perforated plate electrode 9, and a similar electrode 7 is placed on top. A pump 3 is operated to produce a partial vacuum in the chamber 1. Alternating voltage of radio frequency of about 10-30 megacycles per second is applied by means of the oscillator 11. Condenser 5 takes up water vapour which is removed from the cake 20.
