PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for setting a laser output suitable for a magneto-optical recording and playing back device constituted in a way such that signal is recorded by applying to an magneto-optical disk a magnetic field generated from a magnetic head according to recording data to be recorded while irradiating the magneto-optical disk with laser beam from an optical head. SOLUTION: A recording laser output is adjusted, a laser output value P0 for minimizing a coding error rate, a maximum recordable laser output value P1 and a recordable minimum laser output value P2 are obtained, and also a laser output value P3 between P0 and P1 and a laser output value P4 between P2 and P0 are set, and a laser output value is set according to the purpose for the use of an adjacent track to record.
