PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make it possible to easily confirm an operation state by automatically detecting an installation state of a device, and automatically turning an indication such as a symbol toward the direction corresponding to the installation state according to a result of the detection. SOLUTION: This optical information recording and reproducing device 1 is provided with a stationary deviation of focus detecting means 6, a stationary deviation of tracking detecting means 7, and a temporal deviation of focus detecting means 8, and is configured so as to be able to automatically judge the installation state whether the device is placed in portrait or landscape by comparing a stationary deviation Vf of focus, a stationary deviation of tracking Vt, and a temporal deviation of focus Tf detected by each detecting means with the reference values predetermined correspondingly to respective deviations. Then, this reproducing device is configured so that a portrait/landscape change-over means 11 outputs a portrait or landscape signal according to a judgment result of the installation state. Moreover, a display control means 12 is configured so as to indicate a symbol or the like on a display means 13 in the direction corresponding to the installation state of the device in response to the output signal from the portrait/landscape change-over means 11.
