<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the operating rate of an electric melting furnace by greatly shortening a cold buildup time of a plasma arc melting furnace or an arc melting furnace for giving melting treatment to city refuse and refuse incinerated residues. <P>SOLUTION: In cold start operation of the electric melting furnace having a main electrode, an auxiliary electrode and a bottom electrode for melting city refuse and refuse incinerated residues, the main electrode and the auxiliary electrode are moved down and put at their ends in contact with the upper face of an insulating solid material of molten slag existing in a furnace body and then a current is carried between both electrodes for melting part of the insulating solid material. When the part of the insulating solid material is melted, both electrodes are moved down and put at their ends in contact with the upper face of the insulating solid material and a current is carried between both electrodes. The insulating solid material of the molten slag is melted over its preset thickness and then a current is carried between the main electrode and the bottom electrode. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO&NCIPI</p> |
