PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a video reproducing apparatus which can perform optimal reproducing in accordance with the kind of a video signal, so that video of high picture quality can be reproduced. SOLUTION: When using a television receiver 10 with a built-in DVD-RAM player 12 to reproduce a video signal compression-recorded on a recording medium according to one of a plurality of recording modes, a CPU first detects whether the recording mode of the video signal to be reproduced is a high picture quality mode, a standard mode or a long-time mode. The CPU 20 then changes over switches SW1 to SW6 in accordance with the detected recording mode and activates, for reproduction, a reproducing means optimal for the reproduced video signal among a plurality of reproducing means for processing reproduced video signals.
