PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a data backup method by which data backup operation of a hard disk can be performed simply to cope with such trouble that dissipation of data of a hard disk in a note type personal computer of a mobile type or the like, and to provide a magnetic recording tape for it. SOLUTION: This method is a method for performing backup of data recorded in a hard disk in the note type personal computer to a magnetic tape by a magnetic tape drive incorporated in the note type personal computer or a compact magnetic tape drive attached externally to the not type personal computer, recording for the magnetic tape is performed by a helical scan system, reading from the magnetic tape is performed by a MR head, also, the magnetic tape having a magnetic layer of a ferromagnetic metal thin film is used.
