PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing benzyl isonitrile through one step under a mild condition. SOLUTION: A benzyl halide represented by the formula YCH<SB>3-n</SB>(C<SB>6</SB>H<SB>5</SB>)<SB>n</SB>(wherein Y is a halogen, (n) is an integer of 1-3, the benzyl group may be substituted) is allowed to react with a trialkylsilyl cyanide in the presence of a silver salt of an organic or inorganic acid in a liquid phase to produce corresponding benzyl isonitrile.
