PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make a finxing device function so as to prevent tearing of a sheet medium or deformation of an unfixed toner image by making the rotating peripheral speeds of a heat fixing roll and a pressing roll equal. SOLUTION: The fixing device includes: a heat fixing roll 1 which has a heating source incorporated in it and a rubber layer 52 formed on the circumferential face of a rigid core roll 51; and a pressing roll 2 which is pressed against the heat fixing roll 1 and has a rubber layer 52 formed on the circumferential face of a rigid core roll 51. In the fixing device, the heat fixing roll and the pressing roll are freely rotatably supported at their respective both ends, so that one of them is rotated by the other. A sheet medium is passed through a nip N formed between the heat fixing roll and the pressing roll, and thus a fixed toner image formed on the sheet medium is fixed thereto. Opposite elastic contact members 59 and 60 having rubber layers 59b and 60b on their surfaces, respectively, are mounted on the heat fixing roll and the pressure roll in order that the rolls rotate in pressure contact with each other at the same peripheral speed in a position that is different from the nip N.
