The invention relates to a press roller (1) consisting of a fixed carrier (5) and an elastic deformable rotatable roll shell (6). Said roll shell interacts with a backing roll (2), is supported by the carrier (5) with the aid of a hydrostatic supporting device and is displaced in the circumferential direction thereof by the internal surface thereof and a concave supporting surface (24). The roll shell (6) is provided with a radial flexible wall which joints the backing roll (2) on a press area (3) whose width is adjustable within a range extending from at least 8 mm to approximately 40 mm in the direction of the circumferential direction thereof. In addition, said roll shell (6) consists of an electrically conductive material for preventing an uncontrolled electrostatic charge of the surface thereof. Said invention also makes it possible to treat a material web without an auxiliary device or at least with a reduced electrostatic charge, for example, i.e. it is possible to facilitate the transfer printing ink to a printed product.
