Device for illuminating an eye, has a light source (12) and a deflecting mirror (14) that is comprised of a multiplicity of individually controllable mirrors (20). Positioning of the individual mirrors is controlled based on the positions of the eye (18) and or the pupil (28), which are measured using an observation assembly (30) that outputs corresponding position data for control purposes. An independent claim is made for a method for illuminating the eye.
