<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical material with a stain-proof layer free of problems in production, such as environmental problems, and having a good stain-proof property, high film strength and high durability, and to provide an image display unit using the same as a surface protection layer. <P>SOLUTION: The optical material has a stain-proof layer formed by an atmospheric pressure plasma process using a compound represented by a formula (1) or (2) on at least one surface on a substrate. In the formula (1), each of R<SB>1</SB>-R<SB>4</SB>is H, F, a 1-15C F-substituted hydrocarbon group or a group represented by (R<SB>5</SB>)<SB>3</SB>Si- (where each R<SB>5</SB>is a 1-8C hydrocarbon group or acyloxy and the symbols R<SB>5</SB>may be the same or different).
