PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a rust preventive that has high rust prevention performance without containing a nitrogen-containing compound such as an amine compound and that gives no fear of carcinogenicity, any adverse effect on the environment, or the like. SOLUTION: This rust preventive composition comprises an alkali metal salt of a 6-12C fatty acid or an aliphatic dicarboxylic acid as a component (A) and a compound represented by formula (1) as a component (B) contained in water. In formula (1), R denotes a residue of a dihydric or more polyol from which a hydroxy group is removed; R'O denotes a 3-4C oxyalkylene group; (m) denotes a number of 1-12; (n) denotes a number of 1-20; and (x) is a number of 2 or more denoting the same number as the number of hydroxyl groups of the polyol and does not contain any nitrogen-containing compound.
