PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To control sublimability being a defect of hinokitiol and to utilize hinokitiol without impairing excellent antimicrobial properties and mildew resistance of hinokitiol by developing a means for efficiently combining hinokitiol with a polymer compound in which no means for combining hinokitiol with the polymer compound is conventionally known at all, especially a polycarboxylic acid compound. SOLUTION: The method for combining the polycarboxylic acid with hinokitiol comprises concentrating an alcohol solution of (1) cupric chloride or zinc chloride and hinokitiol preferably in equimolar amounts, removing hydrochloric acid as much as possible, cooling the solution to precipitate crystal of a compound composed of one molecule of hinokitiol, one atom of copper or zinc and one atom of chlorine and then reacting the compound with (3) a carboxy group-containing polymer compound in (2) an alcohol solvent preferably in the presence of tetramethylammonium hydroxide.
