<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical film having an optical compensation layer on a base film, the optical film in which double refraction of a protective film or leaking of light in a crossed-Nicols state of a polarizing plate are avoided when the base film is used as the protective film of the polarizing plate. <P>SOLUTION: The optical film has an optical compensation layer (2) on one surface a base film (1). The base film (1) has the refractive indices nx<SB>1</SB>, ny<SB>1</SB>, nz<SB>1</SB>in the axial directions in the film plane and thickness direction satisfying that each refractive index difference expressed by ¾nx<SB>1</SB>-ny<SB>1</SB>¾, ¾nx<SB>1</SB>-nz<SB>1</SB>¾, ¾nz<SB>1</SB>-ny<SB>1</SB>¾ is ≤0.0006. The optical compensation layer (2) shows refractive index anisotropy satisfying nx<SB>2</SB>≈ny<SB>2</SB>>nz<SB>2</SB>, wherein nx<SB>2</SB>, ny<SB>2</SB>, nz<SB>2</SB>are the refractive indices in the directions of X axis, Y axis, and Z axis, respectively, with the X axis being the direction of the maximum refractive index in the plane, Y axis perpendicular to the X axis, and Z axis in the thickness direction. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO&NCIPI |
