<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform the transmission of video data except for a standard HDTV signal by using a conventional transmission path such as an SMPTE292M standard, etc. <P>SOLUTION: A data transforming unit 101 in a transmission side transforms 3-channel video data constituted by three signals of a 4:4:4 format into 2-channel video data by assigning two pixels of the video data into three pixels of a 4:2:2 format. An encoder 102 performs the mapping of the transformed video data into an effective image area defined by the 4:2:2 format, and transmits the video data acquired by the mapping via a data path 10. A decoder 201 in a reception side extracts the 2-channel video data from the transmitted video data.
