PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method reducing a relay processing load by execution of data transfer by a relay device in operation such that storage areas of a comparatively small number of storage devices constitute a virtual volume. SOLUTION: When addresses of the storage devices 180 constituting a certain virtual volume increase, the relay device 100 takes this opportunity of executing the data transfer among the plurality of storage devices to change a configuration of the virtual volume such that the addresses becomes addresses of as few as possible the storage devices. When the number of storage areas of comparatively small capacity among unused storage areas not constituting the virtual volume increases, the relay device takes this opportunity of executing the data transfer among the plurality of storage devices to reduce the number of the storage areas of the small capacity as thoroughly as possible.
