PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a backing strip for steel pipe connection welding previously having a clear positioning line which does not disappear and is easy to be recognized from every position, to provide a production method therefor, and to facilitate the positioning of the backing strip. SOLUTION: The backing strip for steel pipe connection welding has a positioning line pressed over the whole length. For attaining the same in the method of producing the backing strip for steel pipe connection welding, a backing strip or a backing strip stock is pressure-welded on a roller having a protrusion in the circumference and is flowed therein, so that a positioning line is formed. Alternatively, in the method of producing a backing strip for a circular steel pipe connection welding, a backing strip stock is cut so as to be a length according to the inner circumference of a circular steel pipe, and the backing strip is flowed into a bender apparatus provided with a roller having a protrusion in the circumferential face, so that a positioning line and a bend are simultaneously obtained.
