PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce printing irregularity at the time of application of highly precise printing to a postcard or photographic paper while minimizing the lowering of a printing speed caused by the printing irregularity in a serial recording apparatus equipped with a carriage, which is loaded with a recording head, supported on a guide shaft slidably. SOLUTION: The carriage 401 is connected to a part of a carriage belt 412 and the carriage belt 412 is trained over an idler pulley 409 and a CR motor pulley 411 under tension. The CR motor pulley 411 is rotated by driving a CR motor 410 and the carriage belt 412 is moved forward or rearward to put the carriage 412 in reciprocating scanning along the guide shaft 402. Printing operation (recording operation) is started from a position where the carriage 401 is accelerated, the vibration of the guide shaft 402 is converged sufficiently and a printing grade is not affected by the shift of an arriving position.
