A device for transporting a film carrier tape for mounting electronic components has pay out-side tension-applying means (21) for applying tension in a pay-out direction to a film carrier tape (3) for mounting electronic components and take up-side tension-applying means (23) for applying tension in a take-up direction which tension is larger than the tension in the pay- out direction. The film carrier tape (3) is transported with a gear projection (31) of a drive gear (17) not being in contact with an end portion on the leading side in a transportation direction of a sprocket hole (40). The axis of a pressing roller (19) of a transportation drive portion (15) is positioned so as to shift by a predetermined angle in the transportation direction relative to the axis of the drive gear (17), so that the film carrier tape (3) is transported in a state where it is in surface-contact with a drive-rolling surface of the drive gear (17) and a press-rolling surface of a pressing roller (19).
