PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a camera which enables a user to perform focus control at high speed with high accuracy without causing an unnatural sense to the user. SOLUTION: A CPU 20 applies first focusing to a photographing lens 21 on the basis of the contrast of an image of an object 11 obtained by an imaging device 23 via the photographing lens 21 and further applies second focusing to the photographing lens 21 according to a result of range finding of the object distance utilizing other optical system than the photographing lens 21. A zoom position detection section 28 and the CPU 20 detect an initial position of the photographing lens 21 and a displacement of the photographing lens 21 from the initial position. Then the extending amount of the photographing lens 21 is determined depending on a relationship among the range finding results, the initial position, and the displacement in controlling the second focusing.
